Colibri Art Studio was founded in Ukraine in 2003, where hundreds of attendees came through its doors to build real technique and have fun. Now bringing that same hands-on spirit to Calgary, Alberta.

How We Guide

At Colibri Art Studio, we don’t just hand you a brush — we make sure you enjoy every minute you’re holding it. Each workshop is led by one of our curators who keeps things relaxed and social. You’ll pick up real techniques: how to hold a palette knife, how to layer glaze, how to build a mosaic pattern, all at your own pace.
That’s the whole idea: a few hours of guided, low-pressure creativity, in good company, with a finished piece to take home.

History

Our History

Colibri Art Studio was founded in 2003 in Ukraine by artist Liliia Ibrahimova. Over two decades, the studio grew to serve 270 attendees located around the world. Colibri Art Studio now brings that same European artistic heritage, and two decades of refined Workshop design, to Calgary, Alberta.

A Legacy of Artistic Excellence

  • Attendee work exhibited at the Embassy of Ukraine in France, Paris — organised by the Presidential Foundation of Kuchma (2015)
  • Work exhibited at the residence of the Canadian Ambassador to France as part of the International Piano Competition ‘Resonances’, Paris — one work gifted to Ambassador Lawrence Cannon (2015)
  • An attendee’s artwork was gifted to Pope Francis (2015)
  • Full exhibition gifted to the Embassy of Ukraine in Vilnius, Lithuania (2016)
  • Gold and Silver medals at the International Art Competition ‘Golden Easel’, Lviv (2018)
  • Paintings contributed to 5 charity auctions ‘Renaissance of Mercy’ (2005–2009) — all proceeds directed to scholarships for talented young artists

Liliia Ibrahimova
Founding Artist
Liliia spent 12 years studying art across multiple institutions, earning a Master’s degree in Fine Arts, a Diploma in Art and Pedagogy, and a Diploma in Art and Design. A member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine, her work is regularly exhibited in galleries across Ukraine. She has completed international internships across Europe and Asia — including Switzerland, Denmark, Poland, and Buryatia (Russia).
Liliia’s guidance methodology, developed over decades of practice, is built on non-pressured, step-by-step development that integrates technique, art history, and theory. Her favourite genres are landscape and still life with flowers; her preferred media are watercolour and acrylic.
When Creative Sessions are running, she often works on her own paintings in the studio alongside attendees — a small but meaningful reminder that art is never finished.
Vasyl Trokhymenko
Studio Manager & Creative Host

Vasyl holds a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture and Urban Planning from Kyiv, Ukraine, and is himself a former attendee of Colibri Art Studio. At the original studio, he guided composition fundamentals, architectural drawing, and anime and manga sessions — which became one of the studio’s most popular Workshops. His favourite genre is portrait; preferred techniques are watercolour and pencil.
Mission

What to Expect in a Creative Session

Each session opens with a brief introduction to the day’s theory and technique. Attendees then select reference materials and create a preliminary sketch. As you work, our Creative Host provides individualised feedback — along with occasional insight into art history or related creative concepts.
All materials are included. We recommend attendees invest in their own supply kit for home practice. We play soft instrumental music and welcome quiet conversation — artists grow best when they share ideas. At the end of each session, attendees tidy their workstations and may take artwork home or leave it in studio storage.
Policies

Our Policies

Refunds & Cancellations
Fees are non-refundable. We don’t offer cancellations, but with 24 hours’ notice we provide a single-session credit to attend at another time.
Rescheduling by Us
We reserve the right to reschedule or cancel sessions due to low registration or emergencies. If affected, you’ll receive a full refund or a credit toward a future session.
Photography & Media
We occasionally photograph sessions for promotional use. Registration constitutes consent unless you notify us in writing. You may withdraw this consent at any time.
